技術の精度

椅子にとって強度は必須条件ですが、TENONの椅子には一般的な椅子にあるような貫（ぬき）と呼ばれる構造材や隅木（すみぎ）と呼ばれる補強材がありません。
TENONでは椅子の強度を担保するために仕口（接合部）となる枘（ほぞ）を枘穴（ほぞあな）よりも0.3mmキツく作ります。組み立てには細心の注意を払い、じんわりと締め込みながら組まないと木が割れてしまうキツさです。
さらに脚の枘穴の内部で前後左右の座枠の枘同士をタイトに噛み合わせることで接着剤が無くても抜けないほどの仕口となっています。
椅子の強度は材料のサイズや構造よりも仕口の精度によるというのがTENONの結論です。
こうした工法によって軽くシンプルでありながらも丈夫な椅子を実現しています。

Strength is a prerequisite for a chair, but TENON chairs do not have the structural material called nuki or reinforcing material called sumigi that are found in ordinary chairs.
To ensure the strength of our chairs, we make the mortises 0.3mm tighter than the mortise holes. The wood must be assembled with the utmost care and tightened gradually, or it will split.
In addition, the mortises of the seat frame on the front, back, left, and right are tightly engaged inside the mortises of the legs, so that the mortises are so well fitted they cannot be pulled out even without having been glued.
TENON’s conclusion is that the strength of a chair depends more on the accuracy of the mortise and tenon than on the size or structure of the material.
This method of construction makes for a light, simple, yet sturdy chair.
