01What is TENON.
人の手と目でつくる椅子
TENONは、木工の伝統工法の枘組み（ほぞぐみ）で椅子を作るCHAIR MAKERです。
TENONという名前は、「ホゾ」という木組みの技術の名称に由来しています。軽くて繊細な椅子を丈夫につくるために重要なのが、人の手と目を使って丁寧につくられるからこそ生まれるホゾの精度です。細部だけではなく全体の流れを大切にするために、製材から仕上げまでひとりが一貫して、木工機械と手仕事によって家具を製作しています。
実寸の図面を引いて、デザインと制作を行き来することでしか生まれないディティールがあります。現在、家具もコンピュータ制御の機械や流れ作業で大量に生産される時代において、小ロッドで永く大事に使ってもらえる高品質なものをつくる。小さなメーカーにしかできないものづくりを行っています。
TENON makes chairs using the woodworking technique called hozogumi, which is a traditional Japanese form of joinery.
The name TENON is derived from the term hozogumi. The precision of the hoso, which is created by the careful work of human hands and eyes, is crucial to the sturdiness of these light and delicate chairs. To ensure the importance of not only the details, but also the overall flow of the furniture, each piece is produced by a single person from sawing to finishing, using both woodworking machines and handwork.

用品
TENONでは椅子を座るための用具と定義しています。
作品ではなく商品でもなく用品であること。
シェーカーの言葉にBeauty rest on utility というものがあります。美は実用の上に在ると訳せますが、これはまさに民藝の言うところの用の美と同義です。
飾らず人を思い作られた物は自ずと美を纏う。
この言葉を標に、やがてTENONの椅子がシェーカーのように民藝のようにスタンダードになることを目指したいと思います。
TENON defines a chair as a tool for sitting.
It is not a work of art, not a product, but a functional object.
There is a Shaker saying, “Beauty rests on utility”. This idea is synonymous with what is called “beauty for utility” in the mingei tradition.
Things that are made with people in mind, without adornment, will naturally have beauty.
With these words as a guide, we hope that TENON chairs will eventually become a standard, like the Shakers, like mingei.
03Human Quality.
虚実等分
TENONではおもてなしの心で季節のお花を工房に生けています。お花という素材を見つめながらそれらを組んでいると、これは樹で椅子を作ることと同じではないかと思うのです。
お華の道には「虚実等分」という言葉があります。「虚」は人の手を介すること、「実」はありのままを意味します。これは作為と無作為の調和するところに本質的な美が現れるという教えですが、良い椅子とはまさにその微妙なバランスの上に生まれてくると考えています。
素材を見つめ、繊細な手と精緻な目で良い塩梅に加工を施す。それが樹を生かし椅子にする私たちTENONのやるべき事だと思っています。
At TENON, we arrange seasonal flowers in our studio as a gesture of hospitality. When we put the flowers together while looking carefully at their form and make-up, this is the same as making a chair out of a tree.
There is a saying in the art of flower arrangement: “emptiness and reality are equal”. Here, “emptiness” refers to human intervention, and “reality” refers to things as they are. It is a teaching which shows that essential beauty appears where artifice and randomness are in harmony, and we believe that a good chair is born out of this delicate balance.
We look at the material and process it to the right degree with a delicate hand and a fine eye. This is what we at TENON do when we make chairs out of wood.
